Innovative solutions that offer time- and cost-efficient Lifting while being ergonomic and safe for the operator.
A vacuum lifter (or suction pad) is a form of suction cup used for commercial and industrial lifting operations. In the construction industry, they are often used to move large, smooth objects such as glass panes, fixtures such as kitchen countertops, floor tiles, and so on. They are commonly hand-operated, although they can also operate on a hoist.
Vacuum lifters follow the same principle as a suction cup, maintaining a vacuum between the surface to be lifted and a flexible material such as rubber. The vacuum is created by pushing a lever or handle on the suction cup.
Their load carrying capacity is dependent on the type, size and number of suction cups, and the lifting mechanism. Typical safe working loads for hand operated vacuum lifters range from 10kg to 60kg per lifter, with lifters formed from 1 to 4 suction cups. Hoist operated lifters can have from 1 to 50 or more suction cups and can lift well in excess of 1,000kg.
They work best against very flat, smooth surfaces, but can also be congfigured to lift other shapes, such as curves. Rougher textured surfaces make the maintaining of a vacuum more difficult lower atmospheric pressures also make it more difficult to stick to surfaces.

Vacuum lifters are the best tools to use in workplaces because chances of injuries are low. The injury chances are low because they have a safety feature called a non-return valve. The non-return valve prevents loads from being dropped even when power fails. They are the best equipment to use in workplaces because they lift items safely and faster. They are also the best because only a few people are needed to control them.
When fewer people are required you save your money because you do not have to pay wages and salaries to many workers. Your overall efficiency of work is improved when vacuum lifters are bought. They lower the chances of damage to your cargo because professionals smoothly and efficiently operate them. Click here to know about Vacuum Lifter Hire.
Vacuum lifters can help increase productivity while offering an ergonomic solution to your material handling needs. They grip, support, lift and lower the load with single operator control. This operation is fast and smooth, making it ideal for repetitive handling tasks. Material handling equipment that can bear the burden of manual handling from the operator will improve the health and safety of workers and reduce workplace injuries.
Using suction feet allows components to be lifted without damage to the surface or edges of the products often caused by manual lifts or grippers. This makes it ideal for industries that produce panels, boards, sheets, white goods, door or glass windows.
They are a cost-effective solution. Vacuum lifters are low maintenance and when they are serviced, downtime and disruption are reduced, which improves production line efficiency.

How Does a Vacuum Lifter Work?
A vacuum lifter will have at least one vacuum cup which is made of rubber so that it can easily mould to surfaces with a tilting ability. As the name suggests a vacuum is created through the vacuum lifter pumping the air out of the cup, so when the cup is placed against a flat surface they will stick together.
A seal is created as through the air inside the cup being removed it creates a difference in atmospheric pressure to the outside of the cup. This means the external pressure then pushes against the suction cup and sticks it to the surface.
Six Precautions to Take When Using Vacuum Lifter
If you hold an up-to-date certificate for a piece of vacuum lifter, it'll have been checked for safety. However, there's no room for complacency and you must always be mindful of your personal safety on site. So what precautions should you take when lifting heavy loads? Here are six ways to keep you safer when using vacuum lifter.
Always Check Equipment Before Use
Vacuum lifter safety checks save lives – and livelihoods. If you're in any doubt about how to check, consult the equipment's operating and maintenance manual. As a general rule though, you should ensure the equipment isn't missing any parts and is free of defects.
You can also use a safety inspection checklist for vital features, where any deterioration in condition would cause a risk.
Keep Up To Date With Safety Training
It's absolutely vital that everybody on site is up to date with their safety training needs. As well as ongoing training for lifting safety, workers must also receive specific training for any new equipment introduced.
Ensure Lifting Loads Are Within Limit
Not overloading equipment may sound like an obvious tip, but it can be easy to select the wrong equipment or overload it when you're in a hurry. The weight must also be distributed evenly, with the equipment placed on a level, sturdy surface, where appropriate.
Prevent Access To Dangerous Areas
Wherever possible, fixed guards should be used to enclose dangerous parts on machinery. Trip systems can also provide protection, as can interlocking a guard so that machinery cannot be accessed while it's still moving. When guards can't offer full protection from risks, holders, jigs and push sticks are a good idea.
Never Stand Under A Load
As obvious as this sounds, it's surprisingly common for construction site workers to get themselves under a load, particularly when trying to solve an issue with the load. People should remember to always keep a safe distance from the load, protecting themselves in the event of human error or equipment failure.
Perform Regular Inspections And Maintenance
No matter how busy your schedule, you should always make time for checks on equipment and upkeep. If you build maintenance into your company's routine, you'll greatly reduce the chances of having an accident.
For instance, there's no substitute for regular scaffolding inspections. Workers rely upon scaffolding to hold their weight while they undertake complex tasks. If scaffolding fails, the consequences can affect multiple workers. Inspecting scaffolding when it's not in use almost completely removes this risk.
Detailed inspections of equipment should take place at least every 12 months – or every 6 months for equipment that holds people.
If you use our vacuum lifter hire services, you can be sure that the equipment you're working with has been regularly inspected and is well maintained. However, safety precautions when using vacuum lifter should still be followed so that they become habitual.

How Do We Operate the Vacuum Lifter?
Prior to our customers using a vacuum lifter, operators are provided with full training to ensure they know exactly how to work the machinery. Operators also receive a certificate to demonstrate that they have completed this training.
We purposefully engineer our vacuum lifters to be as simple as possible for users. For example, on an excavator it becomes an extension of the machine. The standard controls of the excavator are used in combination with a wireless remote control which operates the instant suction 'on' and 'off' function. Or, if the lifter is attached to a crane, operators can simply lower it onto the pipe and use the remote control to initiate suction 'on' and 'off' , allowing lifting loads with ease.
What Is the Load Test for a Vacuum Lifter?
A standard load test requires that the glass vacuum lifter lifts an object that is at the lifter's Maximum Load Capacity that also has the appropriate Load Characteristics i.e. non-porous surface, not exceeding max load, the load is not too long/wide or not long/wide enough, etc.
To safely perform an actual load test, you should:
Set your load on a stable support, such as a slab buggy, so that it is upright and easy to attach the glass vacuum lifter to.
Direct your glass vacuum lifter towards the load using your mini spider crane, glazing robot, or the other machine you are using. Attach the vacuum pads to the surface of the load so that it gains sufficient vacuum to lift it.
Once the vacuum pump has stopped running and has achieved the needed vacuum to attach to the load you should begin to raise it.
Once raised to the minimal distance needed to be fully supported by the lifter you should continue the hold for 5 minutes.
During this time, you should examine the vacuum lifter, watching out for any slips and falls. The vacuum lifter should remain in place throughout the entire 5 minutes.
If the lifter does slip or fall you should conduct a vacuum test and inspect each vacuum pad.
Load tests can also be performed with an equivalent simulation. This is an alternative to a standard load test as rather than using a physical load to lift you instead apply forces that are equivalent to the Max Load Capacity.
